Right now I feel like a shameless hussy, a little tarnished, the halo sitting a little crooked, somewhat bashful, and annoyed. I can’t keep it down inside, all squirmy and wriggly and just plain yuk, it has to come out.
When you get passively screwed, it’s not like you notice anything at the time, you take it lying down because that’s the most comfortable way to deal with the unpleasant business at hand. But afterwards you can’t help but feel a little used.
Take Wizard of Hits , a relatively new TE, at least I’d not heard of it before, but then, you’d have to be a bit of a TE nerd to keep up with all the TE launches that have come down the pike of late.
Quick name one that really stood out for you.
You might get lucky and remember one of them. It gets hard to remember all the John’s you’ve had after a while.
Sorry I’m getting off track all ready.
Okay back to Wizard of Hits….
See they where on the Vault and Key today when The Challenge was collecting Nerd Surf Badges…so doing the Vault and Keys fit right into the surfing milieu today.
Last night one of my most active team mates, Skyped me about Wizard of Hits….had I heard of it? After a quick back and forth he went off to get us a referral link from either another team member…its one of the things we do for each other, help to spread the wealth around. A while later he came back to me…no luck…inside or outside the team. We wanted to get a link out to the team early so…I joined and got an affiliate link. As team leader I’d rather let other team members get the referrals, but it was late so I hopped it to get one.
Now I’ve been up country so maybe I missed some news about Wizard of Hits… that’s entirely possible.
So late this morning I get all the sites set up to start surfing and capturing the Nerd Surf badges. I keyed up a new set of mini cards, greased my mouse for added speed, and set in for a nice juicy surfing session with lots of XP and badges claimed and greeting people in chat and cheering on my team and all that good stuff.
Logging into Wizard Hits, nothing special on offer, no XP offers.
Sailing is smooth…the site runs well, no hiccups. 50 pages in…oh no badges. Hmm opportunity missed perhaps? I think there was a word game…nothing else too special. Vault and Key came up exactly where it should…no glitches. At least it worked, unlike a few other instances recently.
As team members came on they signed up through my link and sent me a note. I went to the site to my referrals to welcome them…can’t send them emails. I like to thank people for joining me. I think it’s good to welcome people and offer them some help…you know.. be of service. They are after all my referrals.
Oh no chat…very quiet…restful even…zen like.
Had a blast getting badges, finding extra xp, playing games, chatting, and watching our team rise from 11 to 7th. Woo Hoo.
Wizard of Hits….no passion, no interest, nothing to remotely show they’d even heard of XP, Badges, or all the hoopla surrounding the TimTech take on team surfing. Nothing to show interest in the people surfing their site in a frenzy today…nothing….blah, like super big time BLAH.
Doesn’t that indifference just really piss you off?
At the time I didn’t really think about it too much. I was too busy surfing and collecting and playing and chatting and cheering on my team, (did I tell you how much I love our team?), I didn’t notice I was getting passively screwed.
Then, this evening, I read this outstanding blog article How to Be Unforgettable .
Then the penny dropped.
How many of these new TE’s have we surfed lately that barely paid lip service to the new members coming into their sites?
How many really memorable new TE’s have launched in the last few weeks?
How many did anything to show they cared…like being on TE Live, saying hello to the kore members, the ones that spend the bucks, buy credits, advertise your site for you, take upgrades, create a buzz even show up in chat and say hi…talk , interact…be someone ! Is it so hard?
Surfing Cats, Nathan LaPlante’s baby, you go to his site….oh my god….he has his picture right on the front page! The owner. He comes into chat…he goes to TELive…he’s a little bit wacky…you know….about cats….but he’s there. He’s listening…his ads are out there all the time. Noticed.
Take Lisa at Showbiz hits when they had the challenge (just before XP blew everything apart, I think), spent most of her day chatting to people there , taking part in the excitement, so much so I had a couple of team members comment on it……noticed. Hello.
Walter at Traffic R Us…. so absolutely impressive. First TE with the challenge and XP and he made the most of it. Big smile…sending XP to everyone and their uncle and coming on TE Live and lighting up the place….and say what….noticed.
TE Racing League and Robert Arnold with one of the most innovative, unique, push-the-limits, TE’s and one of the communities most outspoken critics, and everywhere…talking, chatting, innovating…..say what…. Noticed.
Then you have the big houses: The House of Geottman, The House of Legacy, The House of TimTech, The House of Tezak….big time players…everywhere, talking, chatting, blogging , creating programs, and games and championing their views and being noticed.
And then you have most of the rest, with hidden owners who don’t show their faces and can’t seem to find the pulse of the community, or horrible as it may seem, just don’t care enough to find a way to be unforgettable.
And of course, because we play the game, are passionate enough to do this crazy thing called surfing, and because we want to win and get referrals and maybe put a little food on the table, or bank something for a holiday…why we get passively screwed.
But you don’t have to take it. Really. It’s why I wrote this.
It’s not about keeping your knees together either (that was for the women way back in my grandmother’s day). It’s about speaking up, letting your opinion be heard.
You are only a victim when you quietly submit.
Okay, so all the squirmy, wriggly stuff is out. I’m polishing off my halo, and smiling at myself in the mirror, and telling myself it won’t happen again.
I also share my gratitude to all those TE owners who take a stab at it and make the effort to be unforgettable.
I’ll go to bed with you anytime.
So I’m still a shameless hussy.
Somethings don’t change.
