How to Express Your Greatest Gifts: Saturday Reads

Book Review:The Charge: Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive by Brendon Burchard.

I love to start things off with a quote to set the stage:

It is only in challenging ourselves that we feel alive once more, energized and engaged in pushing ourselves toward a brighter future, one which lights our hearts and souls with a brilliant enthusiasm unknown to the masses of the caged or comfortable.”
The Charge: Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive

This isn’t your ordinary personal development or personal growth book. Packed between these pages you find more  content than you find in ten other books. The book ignites a fire storm of passion that burns through the pages with possibility: the possibility that you are capable of mastery at higher level of performance and a full, more engaged life.

Brendon divided the book into two main parts: The five baseline human drives; control, competence, congruence ( this chapter is worth the price of the book on it own), caring, and connection, and the five forward human drives; change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness.  A chapter devoted  to each drive    illustrates the drive, often with electrifying stories centered on some of the top performers Brendon coaches. Hearing how some of the top personalities in business , show business and sports, struggled with similar issues to our own helps bolster our own confidence that we can learn and master the lessons in this book. Another section in each chapter called “Activators” illustrate how to engage that drive in yourself, and finally a section called “Charge Points” , a series of questions for you to ponder and write about.

Don’t short change yourself by not working with those questions. As an extra practical exercise, I suggest when you finish the book that you come back and create a journal entry for each questions posed to you in the “charge points” at the end of each chapter.

As I mentioned before, the chapter on congruence is worth the price of the book, I created a business card and bookmarks as a way of reminding me what I committed to in that chapter.

This is the first book I’ve read by Brendon Burchard though I love him for debunking the S.M.A.R.T. model of dream building. See the video below for that and to get a sense of the passion and spirit that you find through out this excellent  book.

Since I started on a quote, I thought it fitting to close with one:

“It is one of the most profoundly powerful drives we have as humans –to live in consistent alignment with who we think we are, how we want others to perceive us, and who we want to become.”
