I Can Taste the Sandy Grit in My Dry Mouth

At three AM this morning the “booming” caused by the expanding of the ice out on the lake woke me. The sound is other worldly. The booming reminded me of Frank Herbert‘s epic novel Dune. (Bare with me here, I am going somewhere with this.)

I still remember, forty-eight years later, the spine tingling thrill I felt as I opened the first page and read the first words that transported me completely to a whole new world, never before seen or realized, for the very first time in my life.

“A beginning is a time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct. This every sister of the Bene Gesserit knows. To begin our study of Maud’Dib, then, take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Maud’Dib, in his place, the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place.

From “Manual of Muad’Dib” by the Princess Irulan

I still remember the first night I walked out on the vast desert of that planet in my stillsuit  under the blue light of  alien moons, stepping with that odd gait to break the rhythm of my steps so that the sand worms couldn’t hear me cross their territory.

I heard words like the Kwisatz Haderach and Gob jabbar and so many more , that helped create a whole extraordinary world with its own detailed Eco-system and a society adapted intimately to the special ways of living on a vast desert planet were water is more precious than any other commodity.

I could go on and on.

Today when I pick up the book once again to re-read it, I am as equally moved as I was as an awkward teenager way back when.

I still read the book with that thrilling sense of awe that one mind could so fully visualize and bring to life with such force that I could actually walk through that world myself.

What I didn’t realize then, and what took me  a very long time to come to realize is that we all create worlds on this scale…it’s called our life.

You have that extraordinary power within you. You have created your world, the one you live and breathe right now.

And you have that power to create that vision for your business, to the point that you can feel and taste your success.

Unfortunately we slowly let that power atrophy as we pass from childhood to adulthood.

But the power is still within you.

You just need to exercise it.

You just need to imagine it.

You just need to live and walk in the world of your dreams.

You just need to do that enough times it becomes so real…it is real.

But now I have to go…I’ve just crossed an expanse of sand, (I can feel the sandy grit in my dry mouth), to a rocky outcropping that hides the entrance to a cave that leads down to the miracle at the center of the mystery of life here on Arrakis better know as Dune.

  • Nick. You are on a real roll this year. Your description of the snowfall was so beautiful, I didn’t know how to answer it…and now you have put Dune into a business concept. I am in awe, I bow to you and your writing.

Not to mention that you absolutely tell the truth. It is in my power, it is in my ability, it is in my hands.

He didn’t have to be told how to put a stillsuit on, and he spilled water for the dead…

  • So you’ve been there too. LOL. I guess that’s what you get when you wake up at 3 AM: you are still in the dream state.

  • Great post nick,

There was a movie before that one, had to look up the year 1984.

Got a little trivia question for you.

Which actor in Dune, the one in 1984, went on to star in the cult fantasy drama “Twin Peaks”.

  • Hi Richard, I have to say that I didn’t like the Dune movie, and I think some one else should have a go with today’s technology. Then perhaps nothing would live up to the book. So in answer to your trivia questions…I don’t have a clue. LOL

  • I love when bloggers use analogies to drive home a business mindset. It allows the readers to relate in a whole new light. It often gives that “ah ha” moment…
