Some books sit on my “To Read” list for longer than others. Then when I finally get around to reading that book, I wonder why I waited so long. This is true for The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D Wattles, the full title of which is The Science of Getting Rich: Attracting Financial Success Through Creative Thought.
My copy plays on the dominate position of The Secret, with a seal on the cover that says “The Secret Behind The Secret.” Every one latches on to the selling power of The Secret, but the Science of Getting Rich predates The Secret by almost 100 years. In fact, there is a whole body of literature based on the Law of Attraction that permeated the society of the late 18 hundreds and early 19 hundreds. Much of this thinking, came from the giants of American Industry.
So, what does all this have to do with you?
As an entrepreneur, the skills these men and woman mastered lead them to massive success. Dream building, Goal Setting, Target Attainment, Visualization, and a determined positive view of an imagined outcome are the same skills you need to build your business successfully.
The ten quotes I include here resonated with me, helped me step up my game, and helped me refocus on building the skills mentioned above.
The first quotes focus on gratitude, an attitude which is vital in holding a positive focus and preventing us from going into agreement with all the negative thinking out there.
1 Many people who order their lives rightly in all other ways are kept in poverty by their lack of gratitude.
2 Gratitude will lead your mind out along the ways by which things come.
3 …because all things have contributed to your advancement you should include all things in your gratitude.
What these quotes say to me is that our number one strategy not just for our business but for our lives is to have a practice of gratitude.
4 The reason for this is simply that the mental attitude of gratitude draws the mind into closer touch with the source from which the blessings come.
As business people, we face tests, barriers and obstacles everyday. We need to develop our faith that all the challenges that we meet; can be overcome, and two the understanding that those challenges grow us. If you think doing that is easy look at the next quote.
5 There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and consecutive thought; it is the hardest work in the world.
6 No matter how tremendous an obstruction may appear at a distance, you will find that if you continue in the certain way, it will disappear as you approach it — or that a way over, through, or around it will appear.
7 You will find that every difficulty carries with it the wherewithal for its overcoming.
Perhaps if you watched The Secret you have the idea that thought is all it takes to bring to you that which you want. Wallace Wattles speaks very clearly about this idea.
8… but you must not rely upon thought alone, paying no attention to personal actions. That is the rock upon which many otherwise scientific metaphysical thinkers meet shipwreck– the failure to connect thought with personal action.
9 By thought, the thing you want is brought to you. By action, you receive it.
10 No better statement of the principle of creative action can be formulated than the favorite declaration of the late Golden Rule Jones, “What I want for myself, I want for everybody.”
The next quote is on the importance of clarity. Clarity of vision is one of my core values.
11 An individual must form a clear and definite mental image of the things he wishes to have, do and become.
And finally, this quote which I wasn’t sure how to categorize except to say if you want to dream a big dream, this idea is very important.
12 You can advance only by being larger than your present place.
What’s your top three favorite quotes from this post? You can pick up to three . I invite you to take the poll.
As always, your comments are encouraged, read, responded to and will get you mentioned on my gratitude list.
